that was new jersey governor chris christie. i said that because that's what political consultants say to candidates all the time. if he does decide to run for president sometime soon, he's probably going to have a copy of that speech handy for the stump speech. i talked to some people in new jersey about the possibility of a presidential run. in fact, most people were showing up at these events were there hoping to take a picture with a guy they think might be in the oval office, not hanging out in trenton. but it was interest, one woman brought up same-sex marriage. i didn't ask. show brought it up. it's legal in the garden state. it was used to frame christie's challenge in those early voting states. this person brought it up to me. fascinating. take a listen. >> yeah. maybe we are a little more liberal than in iowa, but it's the way life is today. nothing you can do about it. >> our msnbc contribute or the and political editor of the grio. perry, my basic question to that woman was how's jersey going to play in iowa? and she

chris christie has the same opportunity in some respects. the contrast between what he's doing in new jersey and what cuccinelli is going to do in virginia today is so obvious. one path is extreme conservatism where the republican candidate emphasizes these issues and goes down to spectacular defeat in a purple state and the other is someone who is pro-life. checks the boxes for the republican party on those issues but doesn't emphasize them and is going to win a spectacular victory in a blue state. this is a model has that worked for republicans at the national level. the last republican president was elected with such a model. >> seems like fairly obvious logic, michael steele. you're shaking your head alt bit. i would ask you to what degree does a strong chris christie election fuel the tea party fire? >> it doesn't. there is a perception gap with chris christie within the party itself as to whether or not he is a, quote, true conservative, which i think is one of the craziest thoughts in the world. there's no degree of conservatism. you

new jersey governor chris christie is sail to re-election. maybe the only politician who might have a bigger margin of victory is bill de blasio in the new york city mayor's race. what does it all mean? stan greenberg has been polling adviser for president clinton and al gore and is co-author of "it's the middle class, stupid." stan, good to see you. good morning. >> chris, thank you for having me. >> let's start with the democrats. an interesting thing about both de blasio and mcauliffe is they're both clinton people. >> we do poll for de blasio in fairness, so we are looking forward to the scale of victory people are talking about, but it's not until election day, until it happens. but i think the democratic party is a diverse party. i mean clearly de blasio has run on a whole range of issues for the middle class and on equality, and you've had -- obviously, i think, terry running as a moderate in virginia. it's the whole stretch of the party. but we're not at war. i mean the democratic party went through probably a two-decade process of re

there's a path for chris christie to try to do the same thing. he's clearly setting up that narrative now in contrast to what's happening in virginia, that he's the kind of republican to appeal to democrats and independents. >> i don't know what you're talking about. i think of george w. bush as a huge moderate, big spanking -- compassionate -- >> look how he ran in 2000. he did do a lot of that footwork. >> the other test we'll know when we wake up, did running against obama care work well enough in virginia or not? the republicans have lost a couple of elections that way and may lose another one by tomorrow morning. the question though for the democrats and you used to advise a lot of democrats, how do you take the economic attack that the house republicans issued here against the country, and all of those problems, how do you extend that out the next year when people move so quickly and forget the fact that you had an irresponsible house republican caucus that was willing to sacrifice a lot of jobs just to make a pointless point? >> i do think

in new jersey, chris christie is channelling george w. bush, the version from 1998 using reelection and hoping to use it to show electability and distance himself from unpopular house republicans. with christie next to line to take over the governor's association, they have been crisscrossing the country almost immediately, touting and perfecting his anti-washington message. let's bring in michelle bernard, president of the women for politics. and jackie. jackie, normally these first of the off, off year elections are the canary in the coal mine about what the climate could be for the following year and i think in many ways there's going to be a couple of lessons and on that front it's going to be, hey, look, tea party type republicans don't win. nontea party type republicans win. that's going to be the overgeneralization as far as the republican party is concerned, but there is 2016. there's a lot more to it than 2014. >> oh, yeah. if as we expect terry mcauliffe gets elected governor of virginia, we'll break that trend where usually a m

new jersey has the republicans race on tuesday, chris christie versus barbara buono. even though this week he admitted publicly he will not promise to actually serve out his term as governor. so his closing argument now is effectively, elect me even though i don't totally want the job and i can't say i won't quit half way through. still, though, the governor was up by 33 points in the most recent poll. the one interesting thing to watch in new jersey is if that big margin holds on election day, what are the down ballot consequences be of that in the state? new jersey democrats have an eight-seat majority in the senate. republicans are hoping that if christie wins big on tuesday that might have pro-republican consequences down the ballot in the state senate to whittle away at the democrats' majority. the senate is also the thing in washington state where a race for one specific senate seat is turning out to be fascinatingly expensive. republicans right now in washington control the state senate but it's really close and their control is only possible thanks to a couple
